Comparison between MACS and SBA-lectin method

SBA-lectin method (SLM) effectively enriches erythroblasts than MACS.

  • Thus far, magnetic activated cell sorting (MACS) was a standard cell separation technique. For example, MACS for separating leukocytes from other blood cells is performed as follows. When magnetic beads immobilized with antibodies to leukocytes are applied to blood cells containing erythroid, leukocytes are magnetized by selective attachment of the beads. Thereby magnet enables to selectively collect the magnetized leukocyte.
  • MACS involving anti-CD71 antibodies are used to the erythroblast isolation. CD71 is known as the anti-transferrin receptor antibody having the specificity to activated lymphocytes as well as erythroblasts.
  • University of Basel reported that erythroblast enrichment of SLM was superior to that of MACS using anti CD71 antibodies.
